UK Appoints ’Digital Markets Champion’ to Spearhead Blockchain Integration in Finance

The UK government has unveiled plans to create a 'Digital Markets Champion' role, tasked with leading the adoption of blockchain technology across financial markets. Finance Minister Lucy Rigby announced the initiative during her keynote at London's Digital Assets Week conference, signaling a strategic push toward tokenization and market modernization.

The appointed official will bridge public and private sectors to convert traditional assets like stocks and bonds into blockchain-based formats. Concurrently, the Dematerialization Market Action Taskforce will oversee the phasing out of paper certificates in favor of digital alternatives.

This MOVE aligns with the Treasury's wholesale markets strategy, which prioritizes blockchain and AI-driven upgrades to issuance, trading, and settlement systems. The program aims to accelerate digital government bond offerings while streamlining infrastructure for institutional participants.
